Background:
At one point in time, Light Yagami was a calm, serious, brilliant student. He was always top of the class, well-liked, and constantly bored with his life. Then one day he happened to spot a black notebook fall onto the ground while looking out the window. He picked it up to read it: 'The human whose name is written in this note will die.' Writing it off as a joke at first, he tested it out that evening twice, finally becoming convinced it was real.

This was the point Light lost his innocence and instead gained a hardened resolve to use the note. He vowed to use the Death Note to eradicate all the criminals and do away with all the evil in the world, creating an ideal place for those he chose to live in peace.

After several days of using the note, the shinigami who dropped it, Ryuk, found him, commenting that he had never seen a human do so much with the Death Note in so little time. By this point, people all over the world had started calling the mysterious criminal murderer 'Kira the Saviour,' much to Light's satisfaction and the police's dismay. Interpol contacted the detective L to take the Kira case, and using a broadcast which tricked Light into revealing his general location, L started the investigation.

Light started being far more cautious about hiding the note, employing traps upon traps to keep it hidden, while at the same time taunting L by controlling the times of death and leaving meaningless 'dying messages'. When it became noticeable that Kira had inside information obtainable only by being related to an investigation member, L sent FBI agents out to track those families, including the Yagami family. Ryuk spotted one following Light one evening on his way home, telling him about that and the shinigami eye deal. Refusing, he devised another plan to trick and trap the agent and all the others, managing to avoid even L's direct detection. He was also lucky enough to be able to catch Misora Naomi, the fiancée of the agent he used to kill the others and a former FBI agent herself, before she could reveal that Kira could kill in other means than heart attacks.

Shortly after this the Yagami household was placed with bugs and cameras, Light realizing this through his extensive safeguards, and he managed to engineer an alibi by killing new criminals while L watched him seemingly studying and managing to remain innocent-looking.

After several more battles of wits between Kira and L, Light started attending university, whereupon he was shocked by encountering L face to face. Frustrated that he couldn't do anything then and there, he agreed to L's tests to see if he was sharp enough to assist the investigation. After this point, the second Kira, Misa Amane, made her appearance by sending a video to Sakura TV. Both Light and L deduced immediately that it was a different Kira, Light realizing that she had to have the shinigami eyes to kill with only a face. He interpreted the note and tape she sent and she spotted him traveling in a group at one location from the fact she could not see his lifespan.

Light met Misa shortly afterward, drawing up a plot to reveal L's real name so they could dispose of him. However, directly after meeting up with L and Light at university on a visit, Misa was arrested as the second Kira. Light had to quickly engineer a plan to avoid being caught, Misa's shinigami Rem removing that Death Note from her possession and setting himself up to discard his own as well. This is the point Light was pulled into Avoria along with his original note.

Obviously, while Light is in Avoria, his Death Note will be rendered non-functional and as a simple notebook. A simple, somewhat-incriminating, notebook.

Personality: As once described by L, Light is childish and hates to lose. He is stubborn and competitive, which is probably one reason why he never settles for second place in anything. He also has a strong although somewhat twisted sense of justice, believing the world would be better if all the criminals were simply killed and seeing himself as the only one to do that.

He has tinges of psychopathic tendencies, with violent emotional outbursts when he is upset, which can lead to him acting rashly. One of his main triggers for this is someone citing Kira as 'evil.' However, he isn't even slightly concerned for anyone he kills, doing so without flinching or faltering.

Although he is very intelligent, probably the smartest student in Japan, he also suffers from an extreme god complex, using the Death Note to set himself up as new god of his 'ideal world.'

To others, Light appears intelligent and studious. He seems to be quite kind, as well as concerned with others, and looks to be an aspiring detective following in his father's footsteps. He can be quite a charmer with girls as well, though chances are if he's being nice to someone it's simply because he has a use for them now or thinks he may later. He is generally intelligent enough to work out a way to manipulate dangerous situations into being harmless or even advantageous, such as with Ray Penber and Misora Naomi.

Light is paranoid and overcautious when it comes to hiding his identity as Kira. He goes to great extremes to guard his room, the Death Note, and anything he feels may cause suspicion. He thinks everything out carefully--possibly too carefully--before enacting any plan he has. He can also be arrogant in this regard, detailing everything in such plans to Ryuk or anyone he lets in on them.
